Va. could be second to mandate HPV vaccinations
10:02 AM EST on Sunday, March 4, 2007
Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine recently said he would sign legislation requiring all sixth-grade girls to be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer.
This action would make the state of Virginia the second state to mandate the vaccine for HPV or Human papillomavirus.
It would make Virginia the first state to mandate the action through legislation.
The requirement would go into effect for the 2009 school year. If parents were to opt out, they would be required to review provided literature and then sign a form.
The federal government has approved Gardasil and has suggested it be given to females before they become sexually active.
