Women's Soccer to Host Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic Friday

The University of Louisville women’s soccer team will welcome South Carolina, Saint Louis and Cincinnati to town for this weekend’s Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic at Cardinal Park.

The Cardinals will host South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while Saint Louis and Cincinnati will open the weekend on Friday at 5 p.m. On Sunday, South Carolina will play Cincinnati at 11 a.m., while Louisville and Saint Louis will close the event with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Cardinals enter the weekend at 1-1 overall following a 1-0 loss at Kentucky on Saturday night in Lexington. Louisville, which opened the season with a 1-0 win over Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 21, is facing South Carolina for the first time in school history.

“We’re looking forward to opening the weekend against a quality opponent such as South Carolina,” said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “Even though we don’t have any previous history playing against South Carolina, I have a lot of respect for their program as well as (head coach) Shelley Smith and (associate head coach) Jamie Smith, who also happen to be good friends of mine.”

South Carolina enters the weekend at 2-0 overall after a pair of 2-0 wins over College of Charleston and Western Carolina. The Gamecocks were picked to finish fourth in the SEC Eastern Division in the league’s preseason poll after finishing with an 11-7-4 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008.

Saint Louis enters the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic at 1-1 overall following a 3-0 win over Northwestern on Aug. 30. The Billikens, which opened the year with a 2-1 loss to Vanderbilt, was picked to finish third in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2009 according to the league’s coaches.

Cincinnati enters the weekend at 1-2 overall following a 2-0 loss to Northeastern on Sunday. The Bearcats, picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST National Division, will host Louisville on Sept. 18 in the conference opener for both teams.

Admission for the 2009 Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic is $5 per person and $3 for youth ages 3-18. Children 2 and under will be admitted free of charge and any U of L student with a valid ID will also be admitted free of charge.

Following this weekend’s Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic, Louisville will begin a four-game road stretch with a pair of games in the Lone Star State at Texas on Sept. 11 and at Baylor on Sept. 13.

St. Matthews Area Ministries Day at Cardinal Park
Friday will be St. Matthews Area Ministries Day at Cardinal Park. U of L will be sponsoring a food drive for St. Matthews Area Ministries with free admission for every person who brings at least one canned good to the game for donation to St. Matthews Area Ministries.
