(WHAS11) -- It’s an injury that has shocked and captivated the nation. Louisville Guard Kevin Ware fractured his leg in the Elite Eight game on Sunday in Indianapolis. His Mom was watching from Atlanta.

“I was just devastated that I couldn’t be there,” Lisa Junior said.

Ware underwent surgery and is expected to return to Louisville on Tuesday. Coach Rick Pitino visited him in the hospital and said Ware would travel with the team to the Final Four in Atlanta, but Ware has been quoted as saying there is a chance he might not go.

Doctors across the nation and here in Kentuckiana are also speculating that Ware’s injury could have resulted from underlying issues.

“I thought that he had trained so much that he had a stress fracture in his tibia and when he fell down it broke apart,” David Seligson, UofL physician said.

Ware’s injury could take six months to a year to heal.
