LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release) – The University of Louisville football team will play seven games in Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in 2012, including four of the last six contests of the season, according to the schedule released today by the Big East Conference.
The Cardinals will play seven home contests for the second time in three seasons, the last time coming in 2010.
Head coach Charlie Strong’s squad opens the 2012 campaign with three straight non-conference home games, including the season opener versus arch-rival Kentucky on Sept. 1. The Cardinals play host to FCS opponent Missouri State on Sept. 8 and ACC-foe North Carolina on Sept. 15. The Cardinals fell to the Tar Heels, 14-7, in Chapel Hill last season.
Before opening Big East Conference play, the Cardinals will play their first two road games of the season in consecutive weeks, facing FIU on Sept. 22 and Southern Mississippi on Sept. 29. Louisville dropped a 24-17 decision at home to FIU last season. The Golden Eagles and Cardinals last met in the 2010 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla., a 31-28 Louisville win.
Coming off an open week on Oct. 6, the Cardinals open their eighth season in the BIG EAST on the road at Pittsburgh on Oct. 13. The Cardinals have dropped four-straight meetings to the Panthers.
Louisville then plays three-straight conference games, beginning on Oct. 20 with a visit from South Florida before playing Cincinnati on Oct. 26. The Cardinals follow those contests with a visit from new Big East foe Temple on Nov. 3, marking the first meeting with the Owls since the 2006 season.
The Cardinals will hit the road for a game in the Carrier Dome on Nov. 10 against Syracuse. Louisville will get its second bye of the year on Nov. 17 before facing Connecticut at home on Nov. 24.
