Freshman Shoni Schimmel was named a first team Full Court Press Freshman All-American on Friday. Schimmel was one of five selected to the first team which included Odyssey Sims of Baylor, Bria Hartley of Connecticut, Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford and Meighan Simmons of Tennessee. Balloting was conducted by the Full Court Press correspondents and analysts from across the nation.
Schimmel finished the season ranked second on the team in scoring with
15.1 points per game. She leads the team in assists with 4.9 per game and ranks second in the league. She dished out a career-high 12 assists against UT-Martin and has registered two double-doubles on the year. The freshman point guard was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week four times and was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Feb. 14. She leads the league and 24th in the nation in three-point field goals made with 2.8 per game.
She was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman team and earned BIG EAST Honorable mention honors. She led the team and all freshmen in scoring in the NCAA Tournament with 23.3 points per game.
She finished the tournament shooting 51.9 percent from the field and
39.3 percent from behind the arc while dishing out three assists per
game.
