LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville men’s basketball’s Russ Smith was the latest to receive a postseason award, as he was named a Sporting News third team All-American late Monday evening.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is among the BIG EAST leaders in scoring (35th nationally; No. 2 in the BIG EAST), steals per game (34th nationally; third in the BIG EAST) and free throw percentage (No. 5 in the BIG EAST). Smith, who became the Cardinals’ 65th player to reach the 1,000 career-point plateau earlier this year, is averaging 17.9 points and three assists per game.

The junior, who has been the Cardinals’ top scorer in 19 games this year, is a top-30 candidate for the 2013 Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Award. Currently, Smith has 64 steals through 31 games and he needs just three more to crack the top-10 list for most steals in a season. Should he achieve the feat, he would become just the third player in school history to appear on the list twice (Tick Rogers, 1994-95, 1995-96; Alvin Sims, 1995-96, 1996-97).

Named an all-BIG EAST first team selection on Sunday, Smith was one of 14 finalists for the 2013 Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Trophy, presented to the nation’s top Division I men’s player.

During the 2012-13 season, Smith has accumulated multiple honors. In January, he was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25. Following the win over Kentucky in December, Smith was named Bluegrass Sports Commission MVP of the game and BIG EAST Player of the Week after a 21-point performance. The junior opened the year by earning a spot on the Battle 4 Atlantis all-tournament team.

Smith is the Cardinals’ first All-American since Terrence Williams was tabbed the same distinction by six different outlets during the 2008-09 season.

Louisville, which captured a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title, earned the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Cardinals will face the winner of St. John’s-Villanova on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
