LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Pairings have been set for the University of Louisville men’s basketball team’s appearance in the 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis, an eight-team tournament staged on Nov. 22-24 at the famed Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas.
After playing a home game in the KFC Yum! Center against Samford on Nov. 15 in the opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, the Cardinals will travel to the Bahamas to face Northern Iowa on Nov. 22 in their first game on the island at 9:30 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.
UofL will face the winner or loser of the Missouri vs. Stanford matchup in its next game of the event on Nov. 23 at either 3:30 or 9:30 p.m. Other initial matchups at Atlantis include Duke facing Minnesota and Memphis playing Virginia Commonwealth. NBC Sports Network will air the 7 and 9:30 p.m. games each day, while AXS TV will air the 1 and 3:30 p.m. games. The championship game will be played at 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 24.
All eight teams in the Battle 4 Atlantis field participated in post-season play last season, including five in the 2012 NCAA Tournament -- Louisville, Duke, Memphis, Missouri and VCU -- as well as three in the NIT with 2012 champion Stanford, runner-up Minnesota and NIT second round participant Northern Iowa. Six teams in the field have been included in early preseason top 25 rankings (Louisville, Duke, Memphis, Missouri, Minnesota and VCU).
The University of Northern Iowa posted a 20-14 record last season -- its fourth straight with at least 20 victories -- and fell by two points in the National Invitation Tournament second round, the Panthers’ fourth straight post-season tournament appearance. UNI returns four starters, including Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Seth Tuttle who averaged 9.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and became the first freshman in the history of the MVC to lead the league in field goal percentage (65.2 percent).
The temporary arena in Atlantis boasts state-of-the-art regulation facilities at the epicenter of the world’s largest open-air marine habitat, complete with lavish guest accommodations, restaurants, bars, spa, lounges, waterslides and the largest casino in the Bahamas. The event, won by Harvard in 2011, will award more than $2 million to participating teams.
