The seventh ranked Louisville men’s soccer team defeated Wisconsin 1-0 in exhibition play Friday night in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Cardinals improve to 2-0 in preseason exhibition play.
“I thought it was another good game against a very competitive team,” said head coach Ken Lolla. “I thought as the game progressed that we went on to find a very good rhythm which resulted in a goal. It was also really good to get a shutout tonight as well. The defense was very solid and both keepers did a great job.”
The first half ended in a scoreless tie with neither team finding the net. The Cardinals started the second period strong. Sophomore Dylan Mares found the back of the net in the 50th minute. Mares was able to cut one defender and play the ball to Will Vitalis on the sideline. Vitalis played it back to Mares who got behind the defense and one timed it for the game-winner.
“I thought we did a real nice job tonight,” said Mares. “We did a good job of connecting passes in the final third and we did a really good job at that in the second half which helped produce a goal. Paolo played me the ball and Will was running down the sideline so I sent the ball to him and he played it back to me in the middle and I hit it straight to the goalie. I thought we were able to build from our last game.”
Newcomer Joachim Ball played in goal the first half while junior Mike Mauro helped secure the shutout in the second half.
The Cardinals will wrap up exhibition play on Monday, Aug. 20 against Lipscomb at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
