LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 13 University of Louisville softball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 9-1 and Austin Peay 12-0 Saturday on day two of the Red & Black Classic. The Cardinals (19-3) will play host to Illinois State Sunday at 2 p.m. The game has been moved up an hour from its original schedule due to rain in the forecast.
Louisville 9 – Miami 1 (6 innings)
Sophomore Kayla Soles went 2 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and Alicja Wolny and Maggie Ruckenbrod homered as the Cards defeated Miami (Ohio) 9-1 in six innings Saturday afternoon.
The Cards used a pair of home runs to jump to a 3-0 lead in the first. Katie Keller led off the home half of the inning with a hit and Alicja Wolny followed with a two-run shot over right centerfield for her fifth homerun of the season . Kayla Soles blasted a two-out shot over the left field fence to give Louisville a 3-0 lead.
Louisville increased the lead to 5-0 on Ruckenbrod’s two-run homer in the third. Trimble’s one-out double set up Ruckenbrod’s two-out shot that went off the scoreboard in left field for her second home run of the season.
The RedHawks (2-11)got a run back in the top of the fourth. Allie Ledbetter doubled and scored on Allie Larrabee’s single to make it a 5-1 game.
U of L answered with a three-run fifth. Keller delivered a leadoff double and Wolny drew a one out walk to set up Soles’ two-run single. Kiyohara followed with an RBI hit to send Soles home and give Louisville an 8-1 lead.
Louisville tacked on another run in the sixth when Taner Fowler reached on an error, took second on Keller’s walk and came home on Brittany Sims’ RBI single for the 9-1 final.
Rachel LeCoq (8-1) got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings. Wolny was 1 for 2 with a home run , two RBIs and two runs, Keller was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs, and
Ruckenbrod was 1 for 3 with a home run, one run and two RBIs to lead the Cards at the plate.
Paige Myers (1-6) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Ledbetter was 2 for 3 with a double and a run.
Louisville 12 – Austin Peay 0 (5 innings)
Katie Keller was 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, five RBIs and two runs as the Cards defeated Austin Peay (6-5) 12-0 in five innings.
Louisville jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first. Keller led off the home half of the inning with her team-best sixth home run of the season hit the scoreboard in left field. Jordan Trimble followed with a double and came home on Soles’ single.
Keller connected on a two-run double in the second to increase the lead to 4-0. Katelyn Mann delivered a leadoff double and took third on Jennifer Esteban’s single. Both runners scored on Keller’s double to right centerfield.
The Cards added another run in the third when Mann reached on a fielder’s choice, took second on an error and came around to score on Keller’s RBI single to make the score 5-0.
Louisville used eight hits, to score seven runs in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Mann, RBI doubles by Ruckenbrod, Keller and Wolny, and RBI singles by Soles, Esteban for the 12-0 final.
Caralisa Connell (11-2) got the win, striking out five and holding the Lady Govs hitless in 3.0 innings of relief. Starter Rachel LeCoq combined on the shutout, surrendering one hit and striking out two in 2.0 innings. Mann was 2 for 3 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs, Soles was 2 for 3 with two RBIS and a run and Esteban was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Cards offensively.
Lauren deCastro (4-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits and striking out one in 3.0 innings. She also accounted for Austin Peay’s lone hit in the game.
