LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Katie Keller was 2 for 2 with two doubles to help lead the No. 10/11 University of Louisville softball team to a 4-1 win over UConn Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 37-6 (10-1 BIG EAST) while the Huskies drop to 17-19 (3-8).
“We were fortunate to pull out a win today against UConn who outhit us and did a great job of coming out to play,” said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. “We were able to string some hits together and capitalize on a few mistakes to come out on top.”
The Cards struck with a run in the first when Katie Keller drew a leadoff walk, took second on Jordan Trimble’s sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on Alicja Wolny’s RBI single.
Louisville added two more runs in the second. Hannah Kiyohara drew a leadoff walk and moved to second Jasmine Smithson-Willett’s sacrifice bunt. One out later, Mann singled to plate Kiyohara. Keller’s double brought Mann home to increase the Cards’ lead to 3-0.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Kim Silva and Audrey Grinnell delivered back-to-back singles and moved on Jacklyn Dubois’ groundout. Brittany Duclos’ RBI hit made the score 3-1.
UConn threatened to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth. Heather Fyfe drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch. Gifford reached on an infield single and O’Donnell’s groundout placed two runners in scoring position with two outs, but reliever Caralisa Connell delivered a strikeout to hold the Huskies at bay.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the home half of the fifth. Keller connected on her second double of the game and came home on Trimble’s RBI single to make the score 4-1.
Connell (23-2) got the win, holding the Huskies scoreless on two hits and striking out two in 3.1 innings of relief.
Kiki Saveriano (11-9) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings. Schiappa and Gifford each had four hits.
