INDIANAPOLIS (WHAS11) -- University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware was rushed to the hospital after an apparent broken leg suffered during the first half of the Elite 8 match with Duke.
Teammates huddled around Ware as he left the court. They were clearly upset when the injury, embracing each other and crying. Coach Rick Pitino wiped tears from his eyes.
The team told WHAS11's Kent Spencer that Ware's pain is under control and he is likely to undergo surgery Sunday night.
The injury occurred with 6:33 left in the first half as Duke's Tyler Thornton made a 3-pointer to get the Blue Devils within 21-20. Ware tried to contest the shot and his leg buckled when he landed.
Some Louisville fans began chanting his name as he was put on the stretcher.
