LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Senior Charlyn Corral scored two goals and dished out one assist in the Cardinals 4-1 win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals improve to 2-0-0 in American Athletic Conference play and 6-3-1 overall while Rutgers falls to 1-1-0 in league play and 8-2-1 overall.
Louisville got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute. Christine Exeter sent a cross to Corral who blasted the shot from 25 yards out over the head of the Rutgers’ keeper for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinal offense continued to apply pressure to the Scarlet Knights’ defense. Corral had another shot go just wide in the 10th minute.
Louisville was awarded a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Exeter sent the shot to the right and Rutgers’ Jessica Janosz made a diving save. Corral had another chance in the 16th minute but Janosz collected it for the save. Rutgers’ Madison Tiernan had a chance in the 23rd minute but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown made the stop.
In the 27th minute, Corral sent a shot into the goal mouth but the keeper batted it back into the field and Shannon Dennehey collected the rebound and sent it past the keeper for a 2-0 lead. Louisville continued to control possession in the first period. In the 32nd minute Louisville was awarded another penalty kick. Senior Chelsea Hunter stepped up and sent the ball left to the back of the net while the keeper went right for a 3-0 Louisville lead.
Rutgers had another chance in the 34th minute but Brown was there to make the stop. A minute later Brown punched a shot by Jennifer Andresen out and Jessica Puchalski collected the ball and slipped it past her for the score. Louisville finished the first half with a 3-1 lead.
Just 50 seconds into the second half, Corral collected an Exeter shot and sent it into the goal for a 4-1 Cardinal lead. The Rutgers offense pressed early in the period but the Louisville defense held tight. The Scarlet Knights’ best chance came in the 54th minute during a series when a shot hit the bar and the rebound hit the post.
Louisville finished the game with a 15-12 shot advantage, including an 8-5 shot on goal advantage. The Cards also held a 6-5 corner kick advantage. Janosz finished with four saves for Rutgers while Brown finished with four saves as well.
Louisville will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 3 as they travel to SMU for an 8:00 p.m. match.
