LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) -- Freshman Victoria Stratton’s first career goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 11 Iowa Sunday at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 8-6 and snapped Iowa’s (9-3) seven-game win streak.
The teams played through 28 scoreless minutes before the Hawkeyes broke through with a goal at the 28:38 mark. Aubrey Coleman dribbled into the circle and delivered a shot towards the cage which was stopped by sophomore Mallory Mason. Coleman collected the rebound and this time the ball found the back of the cage to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.
The Cards answered five minutes later when freshman Elisa Garcia connected on penalty corner assists from sophomores Paige Monsen and Mallory Mason. Garcia’s fifth goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
The teams entered the break still tied at 1-1 with Iowa holding a 7-6 edge in shots and Louisville with a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The second half featured a back-and-forth battle with the teams trading shots and penalty corners. Louisville drew three penalty corners during a two-minute span midway through the half, but could not convert. The Cards pulled ahead on their fourth corner of the half when Garcia connected on a pass from Monsen at the 56:36 mark in the game.
After a timeout following the goal, Iowa applied offensive pressure by drawing three corners and firing off three shots in the final 14 minutes of the game, but senior Erin Conrad added three more saves and the Cardinal defense held for the 2-1 final.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Cards 8-5 in the second half and 15-11 in the game. The teams finished with nine corners apiece. Conrad (8-6) collected eight saves while Iowa’s Kathleen McGraw had six stops.
Louisville (8-6) will travel to Rutgers for a BIG EAST Conference game on Friday, Oct. and will stay on the road to face No. 16 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday.
