LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Two throwers on the University of Louisville track and field teams secured spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with their respective top-12 finishes at Saturday’s NCAA Division I Preliminary Rounds in Greensboro, N.C.

Sam Bombaugh finished 12th overall in the hammer throw competition, earning the final spot to the NCAA Championships in the event. The junior, who will continue his remarkable season with his first career trip to the national stage, registered a solid throw of 61.27m/201-0 on his first attempt of the day. The Falmouth, Mass., native won the BIG EAST hammer throw title this season and also set the school record in the event, breaking a mark that stood for 20 years.

Amashi Kendall earned her trip in the shot put, placing third on a career-best throw of 16.59m/54-5.25. Kendall has scored two victories in the shot put this season, while also finishing runner-up in the event at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The senior will be making her first trip to the outdoor championships after earning indoor All-America honors last year.

Two other throwers also had notable performances on the final day of the meet at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track. Freshman Sebastian Lenz placed 22nd in the hammer throw, and Liberty Slinden posted a season-best mark of 15.14m/49-8.25 in the shot put to earn 23rd place.

Along with Bombaugh and Kendall, Mattias Wolter gives the Cardinals three representatives at the national championships. Wolter qualified on Friday with his first-place finish in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

The NCAA Championships, which are held from June 5-8, take place at Oregon University’s Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
