Louisville, Ky. (WHAS) -- The No. 12 Louisville men's soccer team (12-5-2, 7-10) was defeated by No. 10 Marquette (16-2-1, 5-2-1) on Saturday night 2-1. With the win Marquette advances to the BIG EAST Tournament to take on Georgetown in the semifinals.
Cardinal keeper Mike Mauro was tested early and often during the first half by the offensive pressure applied by Marquette. The first attempt came in the fifth minute when Kelmend Islami fired a shot at Mauro, who collected the ball for his first save. Will Vitalis returned the favor by showing a flurry of dribbling moves to get around Marquette's defenders and enough space to send a shot off at the top of the box, but Charlie Lyon was able to keep it from reaching the back of the net.
As the first half continued to play out, each team traded open looks and chances but each opportunity came up short until Paul Dillion sent a free kick into the box for the Golden Eagles and Axel Sjoberg was able to head the shot in to give Marquette a 1-0 lead.
As the match went on, Marlon Hairston tried to follow the goal with his very own, but his shot rolled wide of the net. Marquette was then able to increase its lead to two goals right before the first half ended, when Bryan Ciesiulka took a free kick that bounced through the defenders and eventually made its way past Mauro.
Marquette finished the half with four shots on goal, while Louisville ended with three. Lyon's made three saves and Mauro finished the half with two.
As the second half got underway, the Cardinals turned up their pressure and intensity on the offensive side of the ball. The first opportunity came when Daniel Keller was on a breakaway and fired a shot at Lyon's, but he was able to corral the ball for the save. Paolo DelPiccolo was able to get enough space in the 61st minute to send a shot towards the goal, which bounced in the air off of Lyon but he was able to maintain composure to recollect the ball. A few minutes late rAndrew Farrell was able to gather the ball off a corner kick and sent it in and crossed over the goal line but was kicked out of the net by Marquette and they allowed play to continue.
The Cardinals had several chances to capitalize to earn their first goal of the match, but fell short on each attempt, until the 85th when Vitalis sent a pass to Zach Foxhoven who fired a shot into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. Louisville had one last chance to try for the equalizer in the 88th minute when Farrell was able to fly by the Golden Eagles defenders and crossed the ball into the box but was soon headed out by Marquette.
Louisville finished the match with an 11-6 shot on goal advantage over Marquette. Lyon ended the game with 10 saves and Mauro registered four.
The Cardinals now will turn their sights on the NCAA Tournament. The 48-team field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m., as the first round of play begins on Nov. 15.
