LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men’s tennis team went undefeated on day one of the 2013 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional.
"This was a great first day for us,” said UofL assistant coach Rodrigo daSilva. “The guys came out with great intensity and determination. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we hope to use the momentum to our advantage"
The Cards sent two doubles teams to the quarterfinals. Juniors Van Damrongsri and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer went 3-0 on the day, defeated IUPUI’s Pat O’Neil and Akshay Verma 8-2 and Tennessee’s Sunay Bhat and Sean Karl 8-1 before taking down the tournament’s second-seeded team, Kentucky’s Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai 8-2 in the round of 16.
Junior Albert Wagner and sophomore Alex Gornet, the fifth-seeded team in the draw, also reached the quarterfinals after beating Vanderbilt’s Anton Kovrigin and Jeff Offerdahl 8-5 in the round of 32 and Tennessee’s Jarryd Chaplin and Markus Kerner 8-6 in the round of 16.
In first round singles action, Damrongsri defeated Tennessee’s Sunay Bhat 6-0, 6-0 and Gornet topped Butler’s Austin Woldmore 6-2, 6-2.
