LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release) – Sophomore Michael Lippens’ 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win over Daniel Bednarczyk lifted the University of Louisville men’s tennis team a 4-3 win over visiting Indiana Wednesday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.  The Cardinals (9-7) improved their home win streak to 16 matches.

“I’m so happy for Michael Lippens to close out this match, he did an amazing job,” said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. “He stayed cool under pressure and did all the things coach daSilva told him to do on the court. I’m just really happy for him and the team to come out and win 4-3. We’ve had so many matches this season where we’ve had opportunities - just like we did today – and ended up losing 3-4, so it was good to win that type of match.”

The Hoosiers (6-8) took the doubles point to start the match. Indiana’s Josh MacTaggart and Daniel Bednarczyk defeated sophomores Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Luis Elizondo 8-1 at the No. 2 spot to gain an early advantage. Court No. 1 featured a battle between the Cards’ tandem of sophomore Albert Wagner and freshman Austin Siegel and Indiana’s Sam Monette and Isade Juneau. Wagner and Siegel found themselves down 6-3, but rallied to tie the score at 7-7 before falling 8-7 in the clinching doubles match. Minutes later, Louisville freshman Alex Gornet and sophomore Van Damrongsri picked up an 8-4 win over Elliott Yee and Chris Essick at No. 3.

In singles action, Gornet tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Essick at the No. 6 spot. Sophomore Luis Elizondo defeated Yee 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 to give the Cards a 2-1 lead. Stiefelmeyer’s 6-4, 6-3 win over Juneau at the top seed increased Louisville’s lead to 3-1.

Indiana pulled within a point at the No. 3 spot where MacTaggart defeated Simich 6-2, 6-4 to make the score 3-2.  On court No. 2, Wagner picked up a 6-4 win in the first set, but Monette took the next two 6-1 and 6-4 to tie the score at 3-3.

The match was decided at the No. 4 spot where Lippens and Bednarczyk battled in a three-set thriller. Bednarczyk defeated Lippens 7-5 in the first set, but Lippens responded with a 7-5 win in the second to force a third set to determine the winner of the match. Lippens clinched the match with a 6-2 decision in the third.

U of L will play host to No. 6 Oklahoma Friday at 5 p.m.
