Louisville, Ky. (WHAS) – Tom Jurich tells his staff to look in the mirror to honestly judge their successes and failures. With Louisville’s entry into the ACC, Jurich can look at his own reflection.
When U of L alum Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor to celebrate the ACC news, he spent the entirety of his seven minute speech paying tribute to Jurich.
“I don’t think I’ve ever met anybody who has done a better job building an enterprise than he has, given what he had when he came to the university in 1997 and what it is today.” McConnell said.
Jurich friend, local attorney David Vish says the foundation of the ACC deal was the athletic program Jurich built but it also took him springing into action when Maryland pulled out of the ACC two weeks ago.
“It really is unbelievable that he pulled this off. It really is, that it was done in such a short period of time and for the University to get such a boost, it’s hard to believe,” Vish said.
The ACC deal only serves to enhance Jurich’s considerable influence in Louisville.
As the city wonders aloud a lease agreement tailored for U of L at the KFC Yum! Center, Jurich can point to how his vision of university facilities has paid off – a vision he told our Rachel Platt he had to fight for.
“I got killed by some of the top business leaders in this community,” Jurich said. [And] What I say to them is I got more return than any dollar would ever show.”
As Jurich juggles questions about Charlie Strong’s coaching future, he plans to hit the ground running on ACC preparations. His work here is just beginning.
“We’re going to get everybody on our staff together, all the coaches and we going to self-scout as you would call it,” Jurich said. “We’re going to look inside and out. We’re going to look at what we need to do better. How do we get better? I’m a big proponent of looking in the mirror.
