LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville track and field’s Sam Bombaugh has been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a Capital One Track and Field Academic All-American, it was announced Thursday.

Bombaugh was one of three BIG EAST student-athletes to achieve second-team honors and one of just four overall from the conference on the men’s side to receive academic All-America accolades.

The Falmouth, Mass., native currently has a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average as a political science major, and, in addition to being a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, has earned the Dean's Scholar award multiple times. In late May, he was named a Capital One Academic All-District selection. Last year, Bombaugh was named to the 2012 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

Athletically, the rising senior compiled one of the best seasons in school history as a member of the men’s throwing group.

In June, he capped his junior season with All-America honors in the hammer throw. At the conference championships, he secured a combined three BIG EAST titles this year, including both indoor throwing titles, to become the first athlete in the conference’s 30-plus-year history to win both crowns at the same meet. Following the conclusion of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, Bombaugh was named the BIG EAST Indoor Men's Field Athlete of the Meet. During the outdoor season in March, he broke the school’s 20-year-old hammer throw record by more than two feet.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her current institution and be nominated by their sports information director.
