LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Thousands of fans swarmed the Louisville football team at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium Wednesday night, hoping for autographs from their favorite players. But, it was also a chance to buy tickets for the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 2.

Last week, in a press conference, Coach Charlie Strong said Cards fans should have as much passion as Kentucky’s Big Blue Nation when it comes to traveling for away games. Now, the players are taking a turn telling fans why they should come to the bowl game.

"It's a sense of comfort, you know,” explained quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, “You feel like you're playing at home once again. When the defense is on the field, they can rock the stadium and things like that."

UofL had 17,500 tickets to sell. So far, they’ve unloaded more than 14,000. Many fans told us they would love to go, but they have to work. Most didn’t seem bothered by the $102 to $215 ticket prices.

“As a fan, that’s what you have to do, you have to support your team and it’s such a great opportunity to play in a BCS bowl,” one woman told us.

Whether you make it or not, the players want their fans to know what they’re support means to them all year long. Bridgewater said, "Your support has been a tremendous part of our success and we would love to see you down in New Orleans."

There are companies offering package deals. Anthony’s Travel packages are sold out, but Miller Transportation still has package deals available. Go to www.gocards.com to purchase tickets for the Sugar Bowl.
