LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Benadate Cheruiyot highlighted the University of Louisville track and field team’s day at the Cardinal Twilight meet on Friday evening at the Cardinal Park Track Stadium.
The last chance-meet was scheduled to provide student-athletes the opportunity to improve upon their marks in their respective East and West regions. By moving into the top 48 of the descending order list, an athlete secures a spot at the NCAA Division I Preliminary Rounds on May 23-25, with a chance of advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Cheruiyot, a freshman, raced to a season best and meet record in the 3,000m steeplechase, winning the race in 10:33.12. The mark is the second fastest in school history, only behind Monica Hernandez’s 2011 time of 10:32.32. Cheruiyot improved her time by more than 12 seconds and, more importantly, moved her ranking in the East Region into the top 40.
In the high jump events, both Cardinal participants finished in the top three. Michelle Kinsella won her event and improved her season best with a jump over the bar at 1.86m/6-1.25, which ties the school record that both she and Kelley Bowman (2006) previously held. The mark moves Kinsella into third on the region’s the descending order list. Chrisjaan Smith took third, clearing 2.08m/6-9.75. His season best of 2.14m/7-0.25 is listed as No. 26 in the East.
In the throwing events, Liberty Slinden grabbed a victory in the shot put despite wet conditions. Patrice Gates took runner-up in the hammer throw, an event where she ranks 16th in the region. Also on the women’s side, Amashi Kendall had a second-place finish in the discus, where she holds the sixth-best mark in the region. On the men’s side, Brad Vivace (shot put) and Nils Westrich (hammer throw) placed in the top five in their respective events.
After battling through heavy rain conditions early in the meet, much of the running and field events inside the track were competed in dry weather.
Louisville returns to action in two weeks at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Rounds from May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. Competition will be held at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium.
