(NEWS RELEASE) -- Six different Cardinals scored as the Louisville women’s soccer team defeated Morehead State 7-2 on Friday evening in Cardinal Park.  Seniors Christine Exeter and Charlyn Corral led the Cardinals with four points each. The Cardinals improve to 3-2-1 on the season while Morehead State drops to 0-6-1.

Louisville struck first in the 15th minute when Corral sent a cross inside the box to a streaking Casey Whitfield who blasted the shot past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.  Thirty seconds later Whitfield crossed the ball into Exeter who found the back of the net to put the Cards up 2-0.

In the 18th minute Morehead State’s Jade Flory blasted a shot from 30 yards out to find the right side of the net, cutting the Louisville lead to 2-1.  In the 31st minute, the Eagle’s Teig Pamateer sent a corner kick inside the box where Elizabeth Tresnak headed the ball in for the equalizer.

Louisville rebounded three minutes later when Nicole Mitchell sent a cross to Erin Yenney who found Exeter inside the penalty box.  Exeter launched the shot past the keeper to put the Cards up 3-2.  In the 42nd minute Corral bent a corner kick inside the box to Shannon Dennehey who headed the ball over the keeper for a 4-2 lead.

Louisville finished the first half with a 10-7 shot advantage while Morehead State held a 6-5 corner kick advantage.  Hannah Seeman finished with four saves for the Eagles while Paige Brown finished with one.

The Cardinals continued to control the game to start the second period.  Louisville was awarded a penalty kick in the 47th minute.  Corral sent the shot to the upper right, giving the Cards a 5-2 lead.  Twenty seconds later Hannah Konermann buried a shot from 30 yards out for a 6-2 Louisville lead.

Morehead State had a chance in the 61st minute but Brown collected the ball for the save.  In the 64th minute Katie Walz sent a cross to Irene Young who found the back of the net for a 7-2 Cardinal lead.  The Cardinal defense held Morehead State without a shot in the final 18 minutes.

Louisville finished the game with an 18-8 shot advantage.  The Eagles held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.  Brown finished with two saves while Seeman finished with seven saves. 

The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 15 as they host UTSA in Cardinal Park at 1:00 p.m.
