LOUISVILLE, Ky.(News Release) – The University of Louisville men’s tennis team defeated Morehead State 7-0 and Murray State 7-0 in a doubleheader Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
“I’m really pleased with our doubles play today,” said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. “I think this is the first time in maybe my career that I used six different doubles teams and they all seemed to work. There are a lot of functional pieces that we can use and put together so I’m really pleased with that. I think some guys like Jeffrey Brown and Van Damrongsri did a lot of legwork  for this team playing a lot of singles and doubles. Michael Lippens and Chris Simich were kind of ‘singles specialists,’ they took care of business on the singles end. Probably the workhorse was Albert Wagner who played at the No. 1 spot four times today. Luis Elizondo also did some good work in his three matches.”
The 34th ranked Cards opened the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to go up 1-0. Sophomores Albert Wagner and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer struck first with an 8-3 win over Ji Hoon Heo and Giovanni Samaha at the top seed. Sophomore Van Damrongsri and freshman Jeffrey Brown teamed to beat Kevin Deligny and David Clifford 8-4 on court three to clinch the first point of the match. Sophomore Luis Elizondo and freshman Austin Siegel quickly followed with an 8-3 win over Hugo Almonte and Nathan Martin at No. 2.
The Cards swept the singles points in straight sets. Freshman Siegel quickly gave Louisville a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nathan Martin at the three-spot.  Sophomore Chris Simich followed with a 6-0, 6-0 decision against David Clifford at No. 2. Sophomore Michael Lippens’s 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kevin Deligny at No. 5 clinched the match for the Cards. Sophomore Albert Wagner defeated Ji Hoon Heo 6-1, 6-0 at the top seed to make the score 5-0. Elizondo picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Giovanni Samaha at the four-spot. Damrongsri wrapped up the match on court six where he beat Nick Mercer 6-1, 6-2.

“I’m really pleased with the team,” said Ecarma. “All of them are going through some flu and colds or injury, but they all set that aside and played some great tennis. I think our team is really starting to show its depth today. We didn’t give up any sets and were very efficient with our scores. We stayed focused and minimized the amount of games lost. MVP for Morehead State was Austin Siegel and for Murray State was Chris Simich.”
The Cards (3-0) will go on the road to face Northwestern Sunday.
