LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Call it “the” upset. The UofL Women’s basketball team knocks off the defending national champs in a 1 point victory. The team is now so close to making another Final Four. But they have to win one more game on Tuesday night before that can happen.
“We came in with a belief, an idea, that we had to do some things extremely well we had a chance to win,” UofL Women’s Basketball Coach Jeff Walz said.
The Cards won by just a point and it came down to free throws. It came down to Monique Reid.
“When the first one went in I knew she was going to make the second and we did it,” Walz said. “I told our kids to win we were going to have to make between 15-20 3's. I just never dreamed we would go 16 for 25 from the 3 point line.”
Baylor had only lost one in 76 games.
The Cards win could be the biggest in the tournament’s history.
The stunner in Oklahoma City has UofL president James Ramsey smiling on Monday
“To beat a team that people didn't think was beatable and Jeff Walz is a great coach, an NCAA coach, had a great strategy,” Ramsey said.
And UofL students saying they are glad to be a Card and see the underdog take home the win. The Cards take on Tennessee Tuesday night in Oklahoma City for a chance to make it to the Final Four.
