LEXINGTON, Ky. (WHAS11) – One week after the plans to renovate Rupp Arena were put on hold, Lexington’s Mayor tells WHAS11 the plans are still ready when the time is right.
After the University of Kentucky withdrew its support of the project, Mayor Jim Gray announced he would suspend work on the $350 million plan which would have also built a downtown convention center.
“The issues that we have with the venue, those issues remain today. We’ll be working on problem solving as we go downstream,” Mayor Gray said. “Timing and pacing I’ve learned is part of every decision and every project going forward. So we’ll turn a corner here.”
Gray says the project illuminated issue with the arena and opportunities in the 46 acres surrounding it.
He tells WHAS11 the city will look for ways for Lexington to improve the Wildcat fan experience outside Rupp Arena.
