LEXINGTON, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Final Four floor from when the Kentucky Wildcats won the 2012 Men’s Basketball National Championship made its way to Lexington on Wednesday.
“Let me just tell you how this started,” said Coach John Calipari. “He [Dan Rivers] said, ‘Coach I just bought the Final Four floor and I’m finding out if there’s anything you would like to do with it.”
It was a surprising call University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari received. Northwestern Mutual, an insurance company, had bought the entire floor the Cats won their 8th national championship on in New Orleans last season. Dan Rivers, who is a spokesperson for Northwestern Mutual, would not comment on how much the company paid for the floor.
The purchase of the floor will be used for many reasons. Part of it will be placed in the team's renovated looker room.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a locker room doing anything like this,” said Calipari. “But then again it seems like here in Kentucky we do a lot of things that have never been done.”
But, the majority of the floor will be divided into 1,000 pieces that Calipari will sign and then be auctioned off to the public.
The proceeds will benefit charities around the Commonwealth. Most of the money raised will help fight pediatric cancer and some of the money will go to The Calipari Foundation.
“With coach as help,” said Dan Rivers with Northwestern Mutual. “I have no doubt we are going to raise many hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
Rivers says they will make an announcement this fall about how people can place bids on pieces of the floor.
