Mother angry about EMS response time

03:43 PM EDT on Thursday, September 7, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Friday night when her son lay injured on the field all Detra Lewis wanted was an ambulance. She says all she wants is an apology.

Shoves and tackles can make any football mom nervous. But Stefan Robinson’s mom had reason to worry about his game injuries Friday – a dislocated his elbow and broken arm. The worst pain for her son? Waiting 45 minutes for EMS to arrive.

“My son’s just laying there saying mom, am I going to die? I said no, you're not going to die. Just be patient.”

After numerous 911 calls. Patience ran thin. Someone flagged down an ambulance off the street.

“The one that took him to the hospital they said we didn't even get a dispatch or anything that there was an accident at a football game.”

EMS officials say when an injury isn't life threatening, the person involved essentially has to take a number.

“It's a non-life threatening call, so it is not on the top of the queue,” says Dr. Neal Richmond.

“You really don't know because you never seen nobody on the scene, so how would you make that call?”

For now, Stefan will sit on the sidelines. He hopes to play once his arm is out of a cast. His mom hopes part of the healing process will also be an apology from the director of EMS.

“I really want him to look him in the eye and say ‘I'm sorry.’ And me, too, because that's my son laying out there hurt,” Detra Lewis says.

EMS officials have told us they plan to meet with the school board to find better ways to respond in the future.

I called Central High's principal Wednesday afternoon. He told me as a result of this incident. They're considering hiring an ambulance crew to be on the sidelines during games.
