Paddlefish poachers put in jail
09:38 PM EDT on Friday, July 27, 2007
VEVAY, Ind. (AP) -- Two people were charged with illegally selling paddlefish, which are highly valued for the caviar females have before they spawn, authorities said Friday.
Indiana Conservation Officers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agents on Wednesday arrested Harold Sizemore, 66, of Aurora, and Dale F. Graf, 58, of Guilford, as part of a continuing investigation of illegal paddlefish poaching from the Ohio River.
Graf will also face charges of illegal possession of a moonshine still and possession of marijuana, which were found at Graf’s home, police said.
Sizemore and Graf were at the Switzerland County Jail awaiting bond, conservation officers said in a news release Friday.
The arrests are part of a two-year investigation into paddlefish poaching in the Ohio River drainage area. A raid in April led to the arrests of 19 suspects for illegal activity associated with the poaching of paddlefish.
Paddlefish are highly valued for their caviar, and poachers can receive as much as $600 for the caviar inside a single female paddlefish.
