(WHAS11) - Kentucky Country Day may have one of the smallest football rosters but it also has one of the largest coaching staffs. You may even recognize some of the names of KCD's coaches.
There are 8 assistant coaches, all at one school. And it seems to be working. Although last year KCD was 2-9, this year they are 5-2.
WHAS11's Danielle Santoro spent some time with the Bearcats including Dave Ragone, Montrel Jones and Tommy Johnson, guys that have college experience, some have NFL experience.
“We have 8 coaches on our staff and not all these coaches are paid and I think that says a lot about our coaches some come out just come out because they love the game. Of the 8, 7 played at least college football. Of those 7, 4 played professionally so that's pretty unique when you have that many,” said Tim Green, KCD Head Coach.
“I coached at some bigger schools here and lot of those schools have already been established. Their players have been playing since they’re 5-years-old, a lot of our guys started playing 3 years ago you know, and to come here and work with a group of young men that are eager and hungry to learn football, it was a no brainer for me, said Tommy Johnson, former Louisville Fire head coach.
“Even if it was just 4-5 average coaches if you can get them for each position that's a phenomenal advantage with teams only having 2-3 coaches. Well not only do we have a coach at every position, but we have some serious experience and ability and I just you can't help but to win with that kind of formula being that the kids are already great,” says Coach Tony Stallings, a former U of L running back.
The students at KCD also realize the advantages of having the coaches.
“The knowledge they bring. Even the little things that you would never think of to see in the game you never heard of. They taught you that and it makes the game flow so much easier and it puts that much more of an advantage on you over the other team,” said KCD senior Robert Wieshar.
“The coaches are what brought us together are what forced us to get an attitude to play the game and focus on winning and you know they taught us so much not just about football but about what it means to be a leader just to work hard every play just do your best,” added senior Martin Resinger.
“It's great to envision this. I guess it all started with Coach Green envisioning getting all these guys together, but to see it come to fruition is just amazing,” added Stallings.
The Bearcats are currently 5-2. They still have 3 more regular season games starting with Bethlehem on the road this Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
