(WHAS11) - Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes have put Kentucky on the PGA golfing map. But it’s a much younger player who could be the next hot golf prospect from the Bluegrass state.
St. X junior Justin Thomas first picked up a club when he was 4-years-old. 14 years and 108 wins later, he was rubbing elbows with some of golf’s elite names.
Thomas was allowed to play in the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship on a sponsor’s exemption.
“The best week of my life, I’d say, when it comes to golf,” said Thomas.
Thomas fired a first round 65 and was able to make the cut and play the weekend. But after a rough third round he missed the final cut. Still, it was a moment he will never forget.
Thomas recalls, “I was halfway through the second round. I was tied for 6 th. I was on the big leader board. I started on 10. It was neat cause I came up 18, I looked to the left and my name was on the big leader board.”
Justin was able to share the experience with his father Mike, who was Justin’s caddy for the tournament.
Thomas finished the tournament tied for 78th. Now he’s working hard to make up the schoolwork he missed while he was gone, but the experience is never far from his mind.
“It’s so hard when I’m just sitting there doing nothing to not think about that week and how much fun it was and the experience and being on the putting green with some major champions and talking to them. It really wasn’t tough coming back. I just wish I was still there.”
