Walk-on Stein basking in sudden star status

Posted on November 3, 2009 at 7:07 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville walk-on Will Stein had a message for Arkansas State players when they asked the 5-foot-10 redshirt freshman if he really was the Cardinals' starting quarterback: yes I am.

Stein played efficiently if not spectacularly in place of starter Adam Froman in a 21-13 victory, a rare bright spot in an otherwise tough season for the Cardinals (3-5, 0-3 Big East).

Stein said he never doubted he could play at this level even while handling scout team duties until injuries to Froman and Justin Burke thrust him into the starting role. The Louisville native added if he didn't think he could compete, he would have gone elsewhere.

Coach Steve Kragthorpe isn't sure who will start for the Cardinals when they play at West Virginia on Saturday, but said it doesn't matter. All three quarterbacks have a win this season for Louisville.
