LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The Kentucky Derby is now just five-and-a-half weeks away and on Tuesday a very important piece of the derby arrived at Churchill Downs. The solid gold trophy that will be presented to the owner of this year's derby winner arrived at the track Tuesday afternoon. The trophy is made by New England Sterling. Work on the trophy starts in the fall and it takes more than 2,000 man hours to make it.
Marc Forbes of New England Sterling says "On May 7, someone's going to have a dream come true and it's with our trophy. We're going to cherish their moment when that owner or jockey holds that trophy aloft in exultation over what they've accomplished, and it's a day that we'll rejoice in as well."
John Asher of Churchill Downs says “There are a lot of symbols surrounding the Kentucky Derby. It's a $2 million race. I've always maintained that the owners and trainers come from around the world just for the roses and this trophy. You can keep the money. They'll take it, but you can keep the money just to get those two."
The derby trophy will be on display at many events leading up to Derby Day so you'll have a chance to see it in person. New England Sterling also created the Kentucky Derby Trophy Collection, nine pieces of jewelry in the shape of the derby trophy made from the same gold used in the trophy.
