LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Members of the American Wine Society judged the best vino from wineries across Kentuckiana Wednesday.

This is the 7th year for the Kentucky Derby Festival Wine Competition, which is part of the festival’s annual Kentucky Proud WineFest event.

This year 164 wines are in the running and are judged in one of several different categories:  White or Red Native American, Hybrid or Vinifera, Non–Grape or Dessert wine.

The judging panel is made up of 12 experts from the American Wine Society who use their experience to score the wines based on appearance, bouquet, taste/texture, aftertaste and overall impression.  Since the wines are judged on a points scale it is possible to have multiple gold, silver and bronze winners in a given category.

The winning wine makers will be announced sometime Wednesday evening or Thursday.

Some of the winners may be found at the ninth annual Kentucky Proud Kentucky Derby Festival WineFest set for Tues., April 30, and Wed., May 1, on the Belvedere at Waterfront Park.

The WineFest opens from 5 to 9 p.m. on both days.  Tickets are $40 and available online at www.kdf.org or by calling (502) 584-FEST.
