April 5, 2012. Louisville, KY. – Singer Cyndi Lauper, who has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 57th annual Republic Bank Pegasus Parade on Thurs., May 3.
Throughout her career, Lauper has won numerous awards, including Grammy, Emmy, MTV VMA, Billboard and AMA. She will perform a brief set before the start of the Pegasus Parade and will appear earlier that day at the Derby Festival’s Celebrity Day at the Downs at Churchill Downs.
“Not only will girls have fun at this year’s Republic Bank Pegasus Parade, everyone will have a blast watching the spectacle move down Broadway on May 3,” Stacey Robinson, Kentucky Derby Festival’s senior vice president of perations, said. “The Pegasus Parade is one of our most colorful and beloved events, and we think Cyndi Lauper will bring tremendous energy and excitement as Grand Marshal. Cyndi is known all over the world and we’re delighted to host her for her time in Louisville.”
Cynthia Ann Stephanie “Cyndi” Lauper was born and raised in the borough of Queens in New York City. The video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” made Lauper an MTV staple and she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1984, as well as the covers of Time and Newsweek. In 1985, she became the first female solo artist since Sheena Easton to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. She started 1985 by participating on USA for Africa’s famine-relief fund-raising single “We Are the World,” singing the climactic soprano part of the bridge. Recently, Lauper has appeared on NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice” with other celebrities such as Sharon Osbourne and Bret Michaels.
