LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - The Kentucky Oaks day started off with a blue sky and warm weather.
"We're watching all the beautiful people and trying to stay cool," said Michelle Burrett.
The weather changed in the afternoon as a storm forced the first evacuation on a big race day that officials can recall.
"It did look serious enough that you were concerned for the mass of people on the infield on a day like this," said John Asher, spokesman.
People filed out orderly and waited for the storm to pass. The Oaks race was under a weather delay and started just after 6:20 p.m.
"One of the most interesting days in the history of the Kentucky Oaks, but certainly one of the most satisfying, exciting and captivating," said Asher.
Asher said they are prepared as they can be for possible storms on Saturday for the Derby. He said they will evacuate people if necessary.
