LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Trainer Dallas Stewart is off the fence and into the field of Derby 139.
A number of late defections means that Golden Soul has now qualified for the Derby with just 14 points. The son of Perfect Soul is now 19th on the list of qualifiers.
Stewart says his colt was a little short of points but certainly has the credentials to run in the Derby. Golden Soul was second in the Lecomte Stakes at the Fairgrounds and then finished fourth in the Louisiana Derby.
Owner Charles Fipke now has two runners in Derby 139. Fipke's Java's War, trained by Ken McPeek, qualified by winning the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland.
Stewart says he's excited for his owner and his horse. He says Golden Soul was very competitive in his last race, finishing fourth to Revolutionary, who figures to be one of the favorites on Saturday.
The trainer thinks his horse is still improving and could be a factor in the long Churchill stretch run. In fact, the horse already has a race at Churchill, a second place during his first race last fall.
