(WHAS11) -- Family and friends gathered at the chapel on the backside of Churchill Downs Monday night to mourn the death of 48-year-old Adan Perez.
Perez's body was found early Sunday in Barn eight. Police said there were altercations on the backside after the Derby, but it's not clear if those were connected to Perez's death. They said wounds on his body indicated foul play.
"There are some sleeping areas where they go, but this was obviously a situation where a body would not be unless something of a suspicious nature took place," Lt. Barry Wilkerson said.
Perez was a groom for Cecil Borel, brother of famed jockey Calvin Borel. Both attended the vigil and were visibly shaken. They consoled Perez's 19-year-old son named Wilson.
"The wealthiest of the wealthy and the poorest of the poor stood shoulder to shoulder and cried and said, 'We care about you'," Chaplain Ken Boehm said.
Perez will be buried in his native country of Guatemala.
Police do not have any suspects. Anyone with information on his death is asked to call police at 574-LMPD.
