LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Horse racing fans prepared to place their bets on the Belmont Stakes. This was not just another stakes race. I'll Have Another needed to run and lead the field for 12 more furlongs to be the first Triple Crown winner in over three decades.
"The horse is a marvelous horse. I would love for fans to be able to cheer on a Triple Crown winner after 34 years," said John Asher.
This is what Churchill Downs VP of Racing Communications John Asher said mere minutes before news broke that Triple Crown contender I'll Have Another will not race in tomorrow's Belmont Stakes. Fans were upset and shocked.
"It makes me sick that he won't have the chance," a fan said.
"A lot of air went out of a Triple Crown balloon today as far as fan anticipation, the anticipation of people in thoroughbred racing," said Asher.
The mood of Churchill Downs reflected the deflated hopes.
"He was going to win; I was going to bet on him," said a fan.
"I think he would have been a Triple Crown winner. The horse had all the potential to be the winner," said a fan.
I'll Have Another won't get the opportunity and fans wonder when they'll get the opportunity to witness the next winner.
"It might not ever be done again, who knows," said a fan.
Without I'll Have Another, we will have another year to find out.
