LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The 41st annual Running of the Rodents was Thursday at Spalding University. This year’s motto, “One for all, and all for rats.”
Rodents like Guinevere, Raphaella and Guillotine all competed for the Garland of fruit-flavored cereal as they sped down a miniature racetrack. The winner of the first race was Captain Jack.
The run kicked off with a parade complete with decorated floats and vehicles. Participants dressed in Renaissance costumes, and in Kentucky Derby tradition, racing fans wore decorated hats.
The event started back in 1973 when Spalding University’s former professor Sister Julia Clare Fontaine overheard a senior complaining about the “rat race” of finals week. She immediately had the idea for a stress reliever before spring session final exams.
The Running of the Rodents has been a fun-filled Louisville Tradition ever since. The event also teaches students about animal care as well as behavior modification techniques.
