(WHAS11) - Officials at a Kentucky horse race track are trying to determine if their ban on a certain type of horse shoe caused fatalities to double.

Turfway Park/horse racing file SF-744 from 7/17.

Turfway Park in Florence reported that eight horses died from racing injuries during its 21 day holiday meet last month.

During the same meet in 2007, four horses died.

Racing officials are focusing their review on Turfway’s September ban on rear toe grabs.  Turfway rescinded the ban on January 2nd.

There was hope that banning the toe grabs would be safer.

Public attention about fatal breakdowns has grown since the high profile deaths of Barbaro and Eight Belles.
