Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is in the market for a new jockey after his connections decide to remove Calvin Borel from the mount. Borel won the Kentucky Derby on Mine That Bird back in May, but because he cannot commit to riding the colt for the rest of the year, owner Mark Allen and trainer Chip Woolley have decided to look elsewhere. Woolley and Borel’s agent Jerry Hissam say there are no hard feelings between the two camps. Woolley said, “They’ve been great people. They’ve been great to deal with. They’ve been upfront through everything that we done. They’ve done a great job for us. We love Calvin. He won us a Derby. What more could you ask somebody?” Hissam says, “I have nothing bad to say about them. That’s a decision they made. It’s a business decision. Just like when we were talking about Rachel and Mine That Bird going to the Preakness. That was a business decision. He acknowledged that and I acknowledge this.” Owner Mark Allen tells WHAS11 News they have a couple of jockeys in mind who will commit to Mine That Bird and he anticipates a naming of a jockey to happen in the next few days. Mine That Bird is scheduled to run in the West Virginia Derby August first, then the Travers Stakes and then the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
