Derby runner-up has been retired due to injury

Posted on October 20, 2009 at 2:50 PM

Injury is forcing the Kentucky Derby runner-up off the track.

Baffert's Pioneer of the Nile has been retired because of a soft tissue injury in his left front leg.

Baffert found the injury this weekend at Santa Anita where the colt is stabled.

A scan showed there was a chance the horse could return to the track in six to eight months but Baffert says he decided it wasn't worth the risk.
