(WHAS11) - A permanent memorial to one of the most memorable winners in Kentucky Derby history is now in place at Churchill Downs.
This 1500 pound statue of Barbaro arrived at the track late last night. The 16’’ tall memorial has been in development for a year. Barbaro had to be put down nine months after he won the 2006 derby because of an injury he suffered in the Preakness Stakes. Darren Rogers of Churchill Downs said, “this memorial of Barbaro that’s going to sit in front of the grandstand at Churchill Downs’ main entrance is really going to be a gathering spot for horse lovers throughout the world. Barbaro captured everyone’s attention with his courageous battle back in 2006.” The statue will be unveiled before the races on Sunday, April 26th. Barbaro’s owners, Gretchen and Roy Jackson, will be there for the dedication.
