LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)- So will the post positions affect the odds? More importantly, will it affect your bets for Derby?
WHAS11 News talks Derby betting with one of the most knowledgeable turf journalists in the country, Steve Haskin of Bloodhorse Magazine.
It looks like one of those Derby’s that anyone could win. So, could you bet on them all?
“If I had the money, I'd hit the all button on all three. On the first, second and third. I mean it's really hard to single anyone. If Dialed In runs his race, he has the potential to be a real star,” said Haskin.
However, the creation of a star might depend on the weather.
The star of the Derby in 2009 and 2010 had a bit of mud spattered on their roses, and the skies on Saturday morning might change your bet.
“If it comes up sloppy, a horse like Pants on Fire is going to move way up. Archarcharch will handle an off track and Soldat's gonna love an off track,” said Haskin.
If it rains, that "all" bet will be more and more important in locating that long shot that will pay big money in the exotics.
Last year, Super Saver was 8 to 1. Ice Box was second at 11 to 1 and Paddy O'Pradowas third at 12 to 1.
