The University of Louisville men’s and women’s track and field team had a dazzling meet Saturday at the Meyo Invitational held in the Loftus Sports Center. The Cardinals rounded out the competition by posting an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, nine NCAA provisional qualifying marks and winning three event titles, while setting a school record in the process.

“It was a great meet! We had a number of athletes who had national level performances and it was the purpose of going to this meet,” said head coach Ron Mann. “It was a great day for our team.”
The No. 14 ranked Cardinal women were led on the second day of competition by throwers Jere’ Summers and D’Ana McCarty who placed first and third in the shot put, respectively.
Summers, a redshirt senior from Oakland, Calif., broke her own school record in the shot put set two weeks ago in South Bend with her throw of 55-09.25 (17.00m). That mark was an NCAA automatic qualifier and the third best throw in the nation this season.
McCarty, who won and broke her own school record in the weight throw yesterday and is the reigning NCAA Indoor weight throw champion, finished third in the shot put with a NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 50-11.50 (15.53m).
Senior sprinter Saravia Richardson posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in both the 60m (7.41) and the 200m (24.19) dash while senior Rachel Gehret cleared an NCAA provisional qualifying 5-10.00 (1.78m) to place second in the high jump.
U of L’s men were led by their jumping squad which won both the long jump and the triple jump.
Redshirt senior Tone Belt, the 2007 NCAA indoor long jump champion, won the event (25-06.25/2.14m) while sophomore Wesley Smith (25-00.50/7.63m) and redshirt senior Rudon Bastian (24-11.25/7.60m) placed second and third, respectively, as all three reached NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Belt’s jump is the seventh best in the nation this season, while Smith had the ninth best going into the competition.  Belt also picked up another NCAA provisional mark in the high jump as he cleared 7-00.25 (2.14m).
Redshirt senior Andre Black, the 2007 NCAA indoor triple jump champion, won the competition with an NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 51-09.75 (15.79m).
The Cards will return to action next Friday, Feb. 12, at the Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
