Seventy BIG EAST teams – by far the most among all Football Bowl Subdivision conferences – were among the more than 950 Division I programs that were honored by the NCAA Thursday for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates.
The awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in their respective sports. A total of 263 schools, out of 347 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list, including 15 of the 16 BIG EAST schools.
The 70 teams recognized by the NCAA put the BIG EAST third among all Division I leagues. Among FBS conferences, the Atlantic Coast Conference was second with 50 programs that were honored, while the Big Ten was third with 40 teams recognized.
Including all Division I leagues, the Ivy League had 117 teams honored, while the Patriot League had 80.
APR scores are a measure of classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team based on the eligibility and retention for each semester or quarter. The awards announced Thursday are based on the multi-year APR scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.
The list of teams recognized includes the Notre Dame women’s soccer team, which won the 2010 NCAA title, and the Notre Dame men’s and women’s golf teams, which both won BIG EAST championships.
The Irish led the BIG EAST contingent with 16 teams that were recognized by the NCAA, while Georgetown was second among league members with 15. DePaul and Villanova had seven teams each that received Public Recognition Awards, followed by Providence (four); Connecticut, St. John’s, USF and Syracuse (three each); Louisville, Rutgers and Seton Hall (two each); and Cincinnati, Marquette and Pittsburgh (one each).
