LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A pair of victories and a school record highlighted the University of Louisville track and field teams’ performance on the second day of competition at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
Competing in one of the final events of the day, Michelle Molodynia, Emily Bushey, Maria Frigo, and Kelsey Cramsey combined to run a school-record time of 9:07.49 in the women’s 4x800m relay. The quartet, which finished third in the race, beat the old record that was set in 2012 by more than five records.
“We saw some outstanding performances from Guillaume Victorin, Patrice Gates, Brittany Owens, Liberty Slinden and the women’s 4x800m,” head coach Dale Cowper said. “The group’s camaraderie continues to improve and this will become a critical factor as the indoor season progresses.”
The Cardinals also had multiple individuals with solid performances on the track.
Randi Norris won her first career race with a first-place finish in the 400m. Freshman Brianne Brown, who advanced past the preliminaries in the 60m hurdles on Friday, qualified for the finals in the event after taking fourth in the semifinals with a season-best time of 8.75. She placed fifth in the finals.
In addition to running on the women’s 4x800m relay, Cramsey had a solid individual performance. She took third in the 800m invitational behind a time of 2:12.41, which is good enough for top five in the American Athletic Conference.
On the men’s side, freshman Thomas Cave turned in an impressive performance in the 800m. The Louisville native, who competed in the event for the first time in his collegiate career, clocked a 1:54.72 in the event for a fourth-place showing. In the men’s semifinals, Calvin Arsenault sprinted to a top-three time in the league of 7.97, also a season-best mark.
Louisville’s field event competitors experienced similar success, with Guillaume Victorin winning the long jump invitational on a season-best 7.75m/25-5.25. The placing marked his second career victory in three collegiate meets and ranks in the top-10 nationally.
One of the best performances of the day came from Patrice Gates, who set a personal-best mark of 20.26m/66-5.75 in the weight throw. The senior, who has been off to the best start of her career, improved from previous best by more than five feet and likely will position herself for a top-20 national mark.
In the jumping events, Brittany Owens finished third in the triple jump, while Kelsie Courtney set a personal best in the high jump by clearing 1.70m/5-7 for an eighth-place showing.
Liberty Slinden and Sam Bombaugh each had solid showings as well. Slinden set a personal best in the shot put of 15.15m/49-8.50, while Bombaugh’s weight throw mark of 19.07m/62-6.75 furthers his top ranking in the AAC.
The Cardinals continue the indoor season next weekend with the Meyo Invitational on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The two-day event begins Friday, Feb. 7, in South Bend, Ind.
