LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Louisville Cardinals already have arguably the best quarterback in the nation in Teddy Bridgewater, and plenty of other weapons, so it wasn't a do or die situation, but Coach Strong is giving the green light on former Auburn running back Michael Dyer. He's asking the fans to as well.

"I hope the Louisville community will back me in giving Michael another chance,” Coach Charlie Strong, said.

And he's not taking his decision lightly.

“Accountability and responsibility are so key to the development of any player. I understand this is a big one. Michael has admitted to mistakes in the past, ones that are due to immaturity or bad choices,” Strong, said.

Charlie Strong's choice has made many people uneasy; it's been the topic day after day on local and national sports shows.

“It may not work out; that's what we have to come to terms with. There's no guarantees in life, but the question is, don't second guess it. First guess it. I think it makes sense,” ESPN radio host Bob Valvano, said. “He's a terrific runner, he comes from a very high level of football of course, having played in the SEC. He knows what it's like to win a championship. He's going to be surrounded by good players so it's not a matter of ‘I've gotta carry the load myself."

“I think Coach Strong will get him in the right place and he'll keep a watchful eye on him. Hopefully we will win all of our games this year,” U of L student, Mason Richardson, said.

On Monday, Strong said Dyer would be signing a zero tolerance behavior contract but he will be given every opportunity to be successful.

“I think he would be dumb if he ruins this chance. I think Charlie Strong, if anyone can, I think he could keep him in line,” U of L student, Daniel Shim, said.

“I almost resent people that are standing back and acting like Charlie's whole reputation is on the line with this kid. I think that's overly dramatic,” Valvano, said.
