Senior Preston Brown has been named to the Rotary Lombardi Trophy Watch List as well as the Butkus Award Watch List. Both are given to annually to the nation’s top lineman.
The 6-2, 260-pound Brown, who is a three-year letterwinner at linebacker, has played in 39 career games, with 24 starts at linebacker. He started all 13 games of the 2012 season and led the Cardinals with a career-best 109 tackles, which placed him fifth in the BIG EAST Conference.
A second team All-BIG EAST performer a year ago, Brown totaled six double-digit tackle games and was 71st in the nationally in stops. He also registered his first career interception in an overtime-win over Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native registered a career-best 17 tackles in a 27-25 win over South Florida and was credited with 13 against Cincinnati. Moving to the middle linebacker position last season, Brown also totaled 12 tackles versus Syracuse and ended the year with double-digit tackles in the last seven contests.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2013 pre-season honors. The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2013 season in order to identify other players who have received significant pre-season honors.
