The 16th ranked University of Louisville defeated St. Mary’s 7-0 Saturday afternoon in a neutral match at Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. The Cardinals improve to 7-0 on the season.
“We looked good at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles,” said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. “Viktor volleyed well. We were business-like in our singles, trying to play very efficiently and not letting them make it a
long grueling match. St. Mary’s is a good team but our players were up
to task today.”
The Cards swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk teamed to beat Gavin Leon and Steven Dawson-Roberts 8-4 at the top see. The 33rd ranked duo of Robert Hall and Alejandro Calligari topped Lucas Tirellii and Sherif Hamdy 8-6 at the two-spot. Austen Childs a d Andrew Carter beat Youssef El Bouzkouri and Gerald Ellison 8-3 at No. 3.
The Cards swept singles to complete the 7-0 shutout. At the top seed, No. 46 Austen Childs lost the first set 7-6, but came back to beat Lucas Tirelli 7-5 in the second set and 10-7 in the tiebreaker. No. 84 Simon Childs defeated Andrea Zannoni 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. No. 81 Carter registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sherif Hamdy at the three-spot. Maksimcuk topped Leon 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 seed. Calligari beat El Bouzkouri 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and Chidi Gabriel rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carreno at the six-spot.
The Cardinals will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament Feb. 12-14.
